Marathon Countdown #5

Now I’m worried. Really worried.

As I write this, I’m under 24 hours away from lining up at the start of the Virgin London Marathon. Five months of pounding the streets and relentless mileage will now finally come to fruition, hopefully!

But there’s a problem. A very big problem. And it comes in the form of my mind. The thing is; by nature I am a worrier, and very paranoid. So when confronted with the prospect of being forced to sit around the house all day twiddling my thumbs (you are supposed to rest before the day of the race), this presents a ticking time bomb for those of a nervous disposition like myself.

So, for example:

I’ve read the final race instructions at least twenty times over.

My bag for tomorrow was packed at 10am this morning, and there’s still more being added by the hour.

Every step around the house, I keep expecting a muscle or tendon to pop or snap or break, despite the fact I’ve never felt fitter.

The list goes on.

But the truth is, I shouldn’t worry, because this is the easy bit. The mileage is done. The sessions are in the bank. The diet has been fine. There is nothing I can do now to change my race preparations ahead of tomorrow and yet still I worry. No matter what I think the simple fact is that all I’ve got to do is wait, and somehow get some sleep before the big day tomorrow.

Judging from my incessant paranoia, this could prove more difficult than the race.
