Henriques: A break from cricket
>>> Last time we spoke, you were heading off to the IPL to play for the Delhi Daredevils – How did you get on?
I had a really good time. We had a lot of great players in our side so it was good to be able to train and play along side with them.
To be honest, I didn’t get a whole lot of game time this year. Of course, only being able to play four international players in each team means there’s a tough battle for spots from those international players. But I had a bit of time out in the middle and really enjoyed it actually.
>>> What do you feel you’ve taken out of this IPL season?
I feel refreshed after this year’s IPL. I had such a good time and learnt so much I feel as though I can’t wait for the next domestic season to start back home.
>>> From the team’s point of view it was a bit of a mixed bag, winning seven and losing seven. Was it frustrating to be so inconsistent?
It was, especially when we know we have one of the strongest teams in the competition. We just couldn’t string consistent performances together which was a shame, but hopefully we can learn from that and have a better year next time around.
>>> Looking back on the season as whole with NSW Blues too; how do you feel things have gone for you personally?
It was an up and down year for us at the blues. We finished really strongly but started the year poorly. Individually I was the opposite – I started strong and finished poorly. Having said that, captaining the NSW side this year was an amazing experience for me and something I will never forget.
>>> How do you feel you’ve improved as a player?
I think if anything my mental approach towards training and playing has changed. I used to over-train a lot, but it’s important to find the right balance so that you’re not worn out when it comes to game time.
>>> There’s no real first class cricket for you until the new season kicks off later in the year with NSW Blues – what do you get up to in the meantime?
Well I’m about to start a mini-tournament against Sri Lanka A, playing for Australia A. So we’ve got a few first class games here in Queensland over the next month and that will keep me busy for a while!
If I ever get a break away from cricket I certainly try and switch off and freshen up. I just recently got back from a three-week holiday which was really nice.
I also I really enjoy the training component. In pre-season it is a great time to make any adjustments needed to my bowling and batting for the season coming up.
